ONE NIGHT OF ANGUISH
by: Gustavo Adolfo Becquer (1836-1870)
- put the light aside and on the edge
- Of the tossed bed I sat me down
- Speechless and sombre and with moveless eyes
- Fixed on the wall.
- How long? you ask--I know not--but when passed
- The horrible stupor of my grief,
- The light was dying, and on my windows
- Laughed the sun.
- I know not either in such terrible hours
- Of what I thought, or what revolved in me,
- Curses and tears--these only I remember,
- And that in one night of anguish I grew old!
