BROWNELL, HENRY HOWARD. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, February 6,
1820; died in Hartford, Connecticut, 1872. His early years were
spent in the practice of the law which he abandoned for literature,
and at the outset of the Civil War a poem of his upon Farragut
having attracted that commander's attention, Brownell was appointed
as acting ensign on board the "Hartford." He witnessed
the battle of Mobile Bay and at the close of the war accompanied
Farragut upon his European cruise. |
