ON THE LADY MANCHESTER

by: Joseph Addison (1672-1719)

      HILE haughty Gallia's dames, that pread
      O'er their pale cheeks, an artful red,
      Beheld this beauteous stranger there
      In native charms, divinely fair;
      Confusion in their looks they show'd;
      And with unborrow'd blushes glow'd.

"On the Lady Manchester" is reprinted from The Works of the English Poets,With Prefaces, Biographical and Critical, vol. 23. Samuel Johnson. London: H. Baldwin, 1779.
